Wiping down the counters and stovetop, are items taken care of almost daily in a kitchen. But, how often is the ventilation hood, its fan’s filter and sink thoroughly cleaned? None of these items are critical to meal preparation, but their cleanliness is not a bad thing.

Ventilation hoods and their fan’s filter in a busy kitchen will develop a layer of grease and dirt from an average week of use. Daily use of a stainless steel sink can lead to a dull buildup that cannot just be wiped away. Following the next steps, can clean and bring luster back to the ventilation hood, filter and sink:

• Cleaning a non-stainless steel ventilation hood:
• Once a week - wipe down the hood exterior with a soft cloth using hot soapy water.
• Vinegar can also be used with hot water, to cut grease.

• Cleaning the ventilation hood filter:
• Check the owner's manual before removing the filter to clean it. Note: The manual may also indicate how best to clean the filter.
• Using a soft cloth, wash the metal filter in hot, soapy water.
• If small particles remain in the filter, rub lightly with a soft plastic brush and rinse again.
• Air-dry the filter before replacing it back in the ventilation hood.

• Stainless steel kitchen sink:
• To bring back a sink's luster, mix 1 cup borax with 1/4 cup lemon juice.
• Rub the borax/lemon paste on the sink’s surface with a soft cloth (*wear gloves as borax can be an irritant to cracked or dry skin).
• Rinse the sink well with hot water when done so that there is no borax residue.
